The
benefits of Professionally Maintained Live Indoor Plants have been
proved globally, by a number of professional and scientific
organizations.
The
potted plant microcosm has been shown to reduce air borne
concentrations of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's). Due to the
large numbers of VOC's, indoor air concentrations are typically
based on Total VOC (TVOC) concentrations - essentially the sum of
the individual concentrations.
The
health effects of exposure to VOC's are consistent with Sick
Building Syndrome effects - ie eye/nose/skin irritation, headache,
lethargy etc. These have been observed in subjects exposed to
1000ppb and indoor air goals have been set to limit exposures to
much lower levels. In Australia the NHMRC level of concern is
approximately 100ppb.
The
research findings demonstrate that the ability of plants to
metabolise VOC's increases with extended exposure to VOC's,
provided the potted plant system is kept in optimum
condition.
The
presence of indoor plants has also ben shown to decrease the
complaints of symptoms associated with respiratory illness and poor
indoor air quality. Several studies have also shown lower workplace
stress, a decrease in fatigue and enhanced productivity.
Some
benefits are;
- Cleaner Air
- Increased employee
retention
- Reduced workplace
stress
- Improved aesthetic
environment
- Promotion of staff well
being
- Noise
reduction
- Improved
office aesthetics
- Improved
Productivity
